민화 화폭에 그려진 도상들은 특정 뜻을 지닌 상징성이 있어서 글을 쓰듯 화재를 구성하여 읽는 그림이라 말하기도 한다.
모란꽃을 그리면 부귀영화를 뜻하고 연꽃은 다산을 의미해서 옛 여인들의 옷감에 수 놓이기도 했으며 연꽃과 함께 그려지는 도상에 따라 새롭게 읽혀져 의미하는 바가 달라지기도 한다.

A와 B가 합해지면 특정 의미를 갖게 되는 독특한 공식의 그림인 것이다.
나는 이런 공식이 흥미롭다.
공식에 충실한 민화는 의미 전달이 용이하다. 그러나 도상의 형태가 국한되어 모사로 오인받아 회화적 작품성을 인정 받지 못 할 수 있는것이 단점이다.
독특한 공식이 매력이지만 그 매력이 독이 되는 현상이 다른 무언가를 찾게 되는 결핍에 빠지게 한다. 이러한 결핍속에서 조형되어진 기형적 공식이 나만의 표현이 된다.

원형의 민화를 분해하거나 새로 조합해서 비밀스런 의미를 풀어내서 조형하는 것이 민화를 그리는 나의 놀이이다. 이 놀이를 위해 호랑이의 뒤에서 그 눈을 빌어 엉뚱한 상상들을 표현하는 것이 나만의 공식이 됐다.
원형의 민화가 지닌 의미를 나의 해석으로 표현하기위해 관념적 조형이 아닌 직관적 시각을 즐긴다.
도상의 의미를 알고 있어야 읽어내는 것이 아닌 마음에 떠오르는 의미가 통할 수 있는 민화, 마음이 보고 붓이 가는데로 펼쳐 놓는것이 나의 민화적 공식이다.

나는 민화를 그린다. 지금의 눈으로 읽어 낼 수 있는 민화를 그리는 것이 나의 소명이길 바란다.

감통 전시(작품) 의도

민화가 갖는 의미는 여러 가지로 해석되며 읽는 그림이라고 할 정도로 숨은 뜻이 많지만 다산, 장수, 화평, 부귀 등 결국엔 복 된 삶을 바라는 것이므로 전시의 테마는 ‘복’이라 하겠다.

민화의 특징은 의미를 내포한 도상을 반복적으로 사용하며 다양한 소재가 다뤄지는 것이다.

여러 민화 중 몇 가지를 선별하여 원형의 민화를 각색하고 각색된 민화를 다른 시각으로 재해석 하였다.

재해석의 초점으로 호랑이의 시선이 상상력을 발휘하게 했으며, 눈동자에 비친 민화의 이미지는 복잡한 해석이 아닌 단순화된 시각적 표현으로 민화를 바라보는 호랑이의 시선을 구현한 것이다. 이는 작품의 화면이 평면화로 끝나는 것이 아닌, 공간의 한 일부분임을 표현한 것이다.

투시도법과 원근법이 무시된 표현기법이 특징인 민화의 심미성과 그 안에 담고 있는 의미의 결합을 알게 되면 민화의 독특한 매력을 느낄 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

백수백복도 (百壽百福圖) | Longevity and Luck

수(壽)자와 복(福)자를 100글자씩 변형하여 회화적으로 표현한 것으로 수, 복 글자를 반복적으로 구성한 것이 특징이며 장수와 다복을 상징한다. 백수백복도는 글자가 가지고 있는 의미에 시각적 상징성을 더하여 장식적 요소를 극대화 하였는데 이는 회화성을 강조한 것으로 빠른 의미 전달을 유도한다고 보여진다. 새로 시도한 작품은 원형인 백수백복도에 반도체 회로도를 배경으로 더해보았다. 글자는 의미를 전달하는데 목적이 있고, 반도체는 전기 전달을 목적으로 한다. 이 두 개의 목적성을 크게 다르지 않다고 생각하여 한 화면에 겹쳐서 표현하였으며, 글자와 회로가 만나는 부분에 오방색을 넣어 전통미를 강조하였다.

It is a work of pictorial expression of 100 letters of 壽 (Su, long life) and 福 (Bok, good luck). It is characterized by the repeated composition of the word, symbolizing longevity and great happiness. The decorative element is maximized by adding visual symbolism to Baksu-bakbokdo (long life and all kinds of luck) which emphasizes pictoriality and induce quick transfer of the meaning. The new work is circular and semiconductor circuit diagram is added to Baksu-bakbokdo in the background. The purpose of the letter is to convey meaning, and the semiconductor aims to deliver electricity. I superimposed it on one screen because I thought these two purposes were not very different, and five cardinal colors were put in the area where letters and circuits meet to emphasize traditional beauty.

Superman

슈퍼맨 | Superman

백수백복도는 같은 글자를 수없이 반복적으로 표현하였지만 똑같은 표현은 없다. 한 글자씩 보는 재미로 살피던 중 수(壽)자에 눈이 멈췄는데, 슈퍼맨의 마크인 듯 보이는 것이 엉뚱한 생각을 유도했다. 수자는 장수를 의미하고 슈퍼맨은 영원불멸이니 우연이라지만 의미도 일맥상통한다 생각했다. 그 생각을 표현한 것으로 호랑이의 눈을 차용하여 생각지 못한 엉뚱함을 대변해 보았다.

Baksu-bakbokdo repeats the same letter a number of times, but there is no identical expression. While having fun looking at the letters one by one, the character 壽(Su, long life) which looks like Superman’s mark caught my eyes and made me take a wild guess.

It’s a coincidence that the character 壽(Su, long life) means longevity and Superman is immortal, but I thought it has the same meaning. To express the idea, I borrowed the concept of a tiger’s eyes and represented a sort of strangeness that no one would have thought of.

연화도는 다양한 상징성과 장식성을 두루 갖춘 그림이다. 연화도가 의미하는 것은 좋은 인연, 부부화합, 다자다복, 등이 있는데 그 중 좋은 인연에 대해 표현해 보았다. 한가득 꽃과 잎이 피어있는 연 밭에 오리 한 쌍이 노니는 것을 그려 화목과 사랑의 의미를 담았다.

Yeonhwado (The Painting of Lotus) has various symbols and decorations. Yeonhwado (The Painting of Lotus) means good relations, harmony of husband and wife, many people bring much luck, passing the higher civil service examination, and so on. Among them, I chose to express ‘good relations’. I drew a pair of ducks in a lotus field full of flowers and leaves as the meaning of harmony and love.

사랑(愛) Love

사랑 (愛) | Love

연화도를 재해석한 것으로 연잎이 하트를 상징하듯 군집해 있고 그 안에 러버덕 인형을 배치하였다. 좋은 인연에 대한 연화도를 바라보는 시각에서 사족을 제외하고 단순히 보여지는 것에 초점을 두어 표현하였다. 직접적 해석으로 단순한 의미 전달을 유도 하고자 한다.

This is a reinterpretation of Yeonhwado(The Painting of Lotus), with lotus leaves gathered like a heart and placed a rubber duck doll in the middle. From the perspective of seeing Yeonhwado(The Painting of Lotus)’s good relations, I focus on what is simply shown and take away unnecessary comments. I induced simple meaning transfer by direct interpretation.

배트맨 | Batman

책가도를 바라보는 호랑이의 시각이다. 박쥐는 보편적으로 좋은 이미지를 떠올리지 않는다. 흡혈귀의 대명사로 공포분위기를 조성하던 것이 배트맨의 등장으로 조금은 친숙하게 된 것 같다. 배트맨의 마크는 어두운 밤하늘에 밝은 조명으로 띄워지며 구조요청의 신호로 사용되는데 수호신을 부르는 의식처럼 느껴진다. 배트맨의 마크는 단순한 박쥐가 아닌 SOS의 의미를 지니게 된 것이다. 민화에서 표현되는 박쥐는 오복을 뜻하는 것으로 장식문양으로 많이 사용되는데, 평안한 삶을 기원하는 박쥐 문양이나 안전함을 요청하는 배트맨 마크는 같은 작용을 이끌어 내는 것이라 보여진다.

It is the tiger’s view of ‘Chaekkado’. Bats do not generally contain good images. It creates a scary mood as a pronoun of vampires, but it seemed to have become more friendly with the appearance of Batman. In the dark night sky, bright light of Batman’s Mark is used as a signal for rescue requests, which feels like a ritual to summon a guardian. Batman’s mark is not just a bat, but the meaning of SOS. Bats are often used in Minhwa(Korean folk paintings) as decorative symbols for The Five Blessings. Bat figures that has meaning of hoping for peaceful life and the Batman mark that shows safety seem to have the same effect.

원더우먼 | Wonder Woman

봉황도를 바라보는 시각을 표현하였다. 봉황도는 상상의 새로 태평성대를 의미한다. 이 상상의 새를 바라보는 호랑이의 눈에는 일반 새처럼 보일 수 있겠다는 생각을 했다. 봉황은 좋은 의미를 내포하지만 처음 보거나 의미를 배우지 않았다면 화려한 새일 뿐이다. 새를 표현한 마크로 원더우먼이 떠올랐는데, 원더우먼은 악을 물리치고 평화를 수호하는 강한 여성으로 그녀의 마크는 하늘을 나는 새처럼 거칠 것이 없는 자유로움으로 나에게 각인된듯하다. 원더우먼 그림은 의미의 내포 보다는 직관적 시각의 표현이 우선이다.

I have expressed my view of the Bonghwangdo.(Painting of Phoenix) Bonghwangdo(Painting of Phoenix) is an imaginary bird that has the meaning of peaceful reign. Although I thought it might look like an ordinary bird to the eyes of a tiger. Bonghwang (The phoenix) carries good meaning, but it is just a gorgeous bird if you have never seen it or learned about its meaning. Wonder Woman, a strong figure who defeats evil and defends peace, resembles the bird mark. Her mark seems to have been imprinted on me as a flying bird, free from restriction. Wonder Woman’s paintings have an intuitive visual expression rather than a meaning.

삼강오륜과 관련된 문자를 그림형태로 표현한 것으로 효제충신예의염치 8자가 대표적이다. 그 중 충(忠)자는 과거에 급제하여 관직에 오른다는 의미를 갖는데, 폭포를 거슬러 올라간 잉어가 용이 된다는 등용문의 전설을 바탕으로 그려진다. 딱딱한 껍질을 지닌 새우나 조개는 충성스런 신하의 절개를 상징한다.

This is a pictorial representation of the 8 main letters of Hyo, Je, Chung, Sin, Ye, Ui, Yeom, Chi, related to The Three Bonds and Five Relationships in Confucianism. Among them, the Chung(忠) word means passing the Gwageo examination and getting a public service job. It is based on the gateway legend that the carp that goes back up the waterfall becomes a dragon. Hard shell of shrimp or clams symbolize the loyalty of a servant.

어번성룡도 (魚變成龍圖) | Rise from Obscurity to Fame

민화에서는 약리도라는 명칭으로 불리는 그림이다. 용문에 오른다는 등용문을 의미하는 것으로 어려운 관문을 통과하여 크게 출세길에 이르는 것을 뜻한다. 이는 잉어가 급류를 거슬러 오르면 용이 된다는 설화에서 비롯되었다.

In Minhwa(Korean folk paintings), it is called Yakleedo, a carp jumping up into the air. It symbolize The Gateway, meaning to achieve great success through passing difficult doorways. This originated from the old narrative of a carp that swam back up the waterfall and became turned into a dragon.

봉황과 용은 성스러운 동물로 각각 왕비와 군왕을 상징하는 문양이다.
‘행운 – 부귀영화’시리즈는 왕실의 상징에 부귀영화를 뜻하는 모란문양을 더함으로써 왕비처럼 군왕처럼 절대권력과 화려한 부귀영화를 내 삶 속에 담고자 함을 의미한다.

The oriental phoenix and the dragon are symbols of Queen and King. The series of Luck(Haeng-un – Bu Gui Young Hwa) is movivated by The Royal Kingdom, and adds the mark of the peony. This means that there are absolute power of kingdom, wealth and honor like the queen and the king in our lives.

용과 호랑이는 액운을 막고 복을 주는 벽사의 동물로 그 둘을 한폭에 그려 ‘용호도’라 한다.
‘복’시리즈는 용호도를 모티브로 벽사의 의미를 담았다. 이는 천지의 기운을 받아 삿된 것을 물리치고 내 삶에 복만 가득 더해주는 것을 의미한다.

The dragon and the tiger were believed to possess beneficial virtues and to protect human beings from evil forces. They are symbols of happiness, wealth, and health. I drew them on a canvas, and it’s called “Young Ho Do.” The Bock series is based on it.
